Lest We Forget

The war in Ukraine is rightly deserving of our prayers for peace. The suffering of the people is a concern.

Let’s not forget them.

Let’s pray for those who are experiencing violence, horror, and displacement in Ukraine.

But, let’s not forget those who have been suffering and displaced from prior conflicts either. Those displaced from Ethiopia, Sudan, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar, Syria, Kurdistan, Palestine, Central America, Venezuela, and so many more places, heard only with muted voices in Canada.

As the people of God, let us humble ourselves and pray. Pray that even in our weakness of privilege and power, that we can love our neighbours well.

Let’s act quickly and with a right sacrifice, “lest we forget”. (Rudyard Kipling, Recessional; Deuteronomy 6:12)

Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion
and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.
² For day after day they seek me out;
they seem eager to know my ways,

to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
⁷ Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
⁸ Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
⁹ Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
