What Happened to Our Charitable Status?

In September 2025, the Mission Central team discovered that we had lost our status as a registered Canadian charity. It came as a big surprise, and as of mid 2026, we are still feeling the effects.

Last year, our accountant had a medical issue come up right when our T3010 information return was due. The return was prepared and ready to go, but it was never filed. By the time anyone realized the return had not been sent in, it was too late—the grace period had expired, and our charitable status was revoked by the CRA.

As a result, any charitable donations made directly to Mission Central in 2025 were no longer able to receive a tax receipt. This was obviously very disappointing for our donors—we've apologized and offered refunds where we can.

Step 1: We cancelled all of our monthly supporters’ recurring donations as soon as we found out we could no longer issue tax receipts, and began notifying the donors whose donations were no longer eligible for tax receipts.

Step 2: we filed the late T3010 and submitted the late-filing penalty fee.

Step 3: Mission Central was approved as a ministry project of the Great Commission Foundation (GCF). This allows donations made to Mission Central through GCF to receive tax receipts. They take a percentage of each donation, which certainly affects Mission Central's finances, but it allows us to do right by our donors.

Step 4: We have four years to clear things up from the date of revocation (September 2025). With the original error corrected in Step 2, the next step is to reapply for charitable status, which we’re working on. The good news is that once our charitable status is restored, it will be restored retroactively, which will allow us to issue tax receipts for the 2025 donations that were affected!
